Nurse Residency

MU Health Care's Nurse Residency is a yearlong program that includes training and support designed to help the new nurse gain confidence and skill during the transition from student to professional nurse.

In conjunction with unit-based orientation, Nurse Residents meet at monthly Tiger Tales groups and seminars that include:

  • Lively discussion of clinical topics and situations
  • Hands-on experience with equipment
  • Active participation in simulated situations
  • Sharpening of communication, delegation and teaching skills
  • Self-care strategies such as work/life balance, stress reduction and professional development
  • Involvement in an Evidenced Based Practice Project to be presented at the Graduation Ceremony

Preceptor Training and Development

The Preceptor program is designed for experienced clinical staff (>2 years of exemplary performance preferred). It consists of four, 3-hour sessions conducted weekly over a four-week period. Learners must commit to attending all of the sessions for completion. There are two trainings session available: morning (0800-1100) or afternoon (1300-1600).

Target Audience: Any clinical staff member who orients new staff to unit or department policies and procedures.

CARE

Mentoring new nurses is a vital contribution to the success of MU Health Care. Preceptors are integral parts to helping new nurses feel welcome and supported.

DELIVER

With the patient at the center of our focus, preceptors help ensure new nurses learn the skills necessary to deliver the highest quality care possible for our patients.

INNOVATE

Preceptors are encouraged to develop new ways to address challenges in training new nursing staff members. Orientation requirements are based on the latest evidence-based practice guidelines and are updated accordingly to provide the best start for our new nurses.

SERVE

We are looking for the best and brightest nurses MU Health Care has to offer to train our new nurses. If you are interested in becoming a preceptor, please see one of the SLS on your unit to determine if becoming a preceptor is right for you.

Request for Nursing CE Credit

University of Missouri Health Care is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. CED can assist you in identifying educational programs that would be appropriate for CE credit through the predetermined criteria from these organizations.

Please contact Heather Jones for further information on this at least 60 days prior to the scheduled course date to allow the time for completion of paperwork and approval needed.
